Bangalore metro is called Namma Metro, which means 'our metro' and is a rapid commuting system serving the city. It is the 2nd largest metro line in India, covering 76.95 Km. The metro was inaugurated in 2011 and has become the 1st underground metro system in southern India. There are mainly 6 lines: Yellow, Green, Purple, Blue, Pink, and Orange line, serving the city. The top areas of the city, like Whitefield, are served by the Purple Metro line. In the area, Kadugodi Metro Station serves the people and is 3.6 Km away from Prestige Raintree Park.
Namma Metro has a mix of underground, elevated, and at-grade stations. As of November 2024, it has 68 operational stations. The Bangalore metro map includes 59 elevated, 8 underground, and 1 at-grade station. The metro runs on standard-gauge tracks.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) controls the functioning of the metros. It is a partnership between the Government of India and the Karnataka State Government. It is responsible for building, running, and expanding the Namma Metro network. It also sets the time, coaches, and speed of the metro.
The Bangalore Metro currently has two routes in operation: the Purple Line and the Green Line. Four more routes are being built and will open soon.
1. Purple Line - The Purple Line was the first Namma Metro route to start in Bangalore. It was part of Phase 1 and has 37 stations and 4 interchanges. This line also introduced Bangalore’s first metro station that is underground.
2. Green Line - The Green Line is the second metro route in Bangalore. It covers 31 km and has 29 stations, as shown on the Namma Metro map.
3. Yellow Line - The Yellow Line is upcoming and will connect Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road to Bommasandra, covering over 18 km. It will have 16 stations and will soon extend to Hosur.
4. Blue Line - This will be Bangalore's first airport metro, connecting Kasturi Nagar to the airport. It will cover 58.19 km and have 30 stations, as per the metro plan.
5. Pink Line - This will be Bangalore's first airport metro, connecting Kasturi Nagar to the airport. It will cover 58.19 km and have 30 stations, as per the metro plan.
6. Orange Line - This line will be built in Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro. It will link two routes, Phase 2A and Phase 3A, at one station. The line is expected to be ready by 2028-29.
Namma Metro trains run every 4-5 minutes. From Monday to Friday, the metro operates from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. On the second and fourth Saturdays or public holidays, it runs from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. On Sundays, the timings are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Metro fares start at Rs 10 and go up to around Rs 45. The fare depends on how far the passenger travels from their boarding station.
